Village of the Hills was initially an Austin suburb in its extraterritorial jurisdiction. In 1996 Austin agreed to release The Village to the city of Lakeway with the agreement that Lakeway would consent to a municipality within the Village territory. The agreement was completed and in 1997 a resolution was set before The Village residents and the approval was resounding. The Village of the Hills would be official.

Today The Village is a community of almost 2,000 residents. Housing in the area consists of predominantly single family homes. These homes have a median price of $425,000 and housing construction has been ongoing since the 1980s. The community is well maintained and eye pleasing due to an active homeowners association. Yards are spacious and well manicured. Winding tree lined streets give the community a park like atmosphere and the residents of The Hills strive to maintain a lifestyle in keeping with the community attitude and appearance.

Lake Travis Independent School District educates the children of The Village. The district has 8 school campuses that provide education to 5500 students. The district is all about academic excellence. This attitude starts with the district and its campuses. The district strives to offer a diverse learning experience and is committed to meeting and exceeding educational goals while the campuses have achieved academic excellence with state ratings of recognized and exemplary. It's little the wonder the students of Lake Travis ISD are receiving an excellent education as evidenced by the continuing growth in test scores and academic achievement.

The Village of the Hills has only one local business--the Clubhouse. However, nearby communities more than provide ample shopping and dining choices for a comfortable lifestyle. Austin is not far away and many residents slip away into the city for an enjoyable evening while the community of The Village of the Hills peacefully waits.
