Oak Hill, TX Real Estate

Oak Hill is a community that came and went several times over the years. The area settlers came to Oak Hill in the early 1800s, at that time the community was called Live Oaks Springs. The community was later known as Live Oak and Oatmanville, then in 1870 a post office was approved with the name Oak Hill, the postmaster was Swen M. Berryman.

During the construction of a new State Capitol Building, Oak Hill thrived and in 1884 there were four saloons and a general store. The community had 75 residents. The community grew to over 200 but later fell upon hard times and the post office was discontinued in 1910 and mail for the community was forwarded to Austin. Despite the absence of a post office the community of Oak Hill remained small but intact. Today the community is actually a group of neighborhoods who have banded together to preserve their independence from Austin.

Oak Hill was slated to be annexed by Austin in 1983. This was not a popular choice for many of the residents. However when Austin failed to implement some of it's promises, the residents of Oak Hill took action. In 1985, The Oak Hills Association of Neighborhoods was formed. The association is made up of 23 neighborhoods and the boundaries are somewhat hazy. These neighborhoods represent a huge diversity in style and demographics. Housing includes older stately homes on large lots to new and modern condominium complexes and master planned communities. The area is said to include up to 100,000 residents. Oak Hill has it's own paper, the Oak Hill Gazette, which exclusively covers the area of Oak Hill.

Austin Independent School District provides education to the children of Oak Hill. The school district is home to 110 campuses and provides a lasting education to over 82,000 students. The district has a diverse student population with many nationalities represented. Many districts would have a problem with such diversity but Austin ISD has accepted this challenge and is taking every opportunity to introduce many different learning tools to each student within the district has the same learning opportunity.

This approach is working and test scores are increasing. The district as a whole along with the individual campuses are striving to maintain a high level of educational standards set by the state of Texas and the district is meeting and exceeding these goals; the individual campuses are working towards the same goals. Austin ISD makes the learning environment work for all students.
