In the 1830s a small community was established atop a hill just four miles southeast of Austin. The town was founded by Jessie C. Tannhill and dubbed "Montopolis" because of its location on top of that small hill. Despite its close proximity to Austin, the town succeeded and had 50 residents by the late 1880s. In 1900 the population was listed at 142 but with Austin so close the post office closed two years later and mail was delivered to Austin. Most of Montopolis was annexed by Austin in the 1950s but additional areas were annexed in the 1960s and 1970s. Today Montopolis is a thriving Austin suburb with 4,300 residents.

You'll find communities built in the 1970s 80s and 90s with homes of varying architectural styles and amenities in keeping with the period.
