Jonah, TX Real Estate

In 1857 James P. Warnock and Joseph T. Mileham built a mill on the San Gabriel River and a small community slowly grew. The town went by several names including Water Valley and Eureka Mills. In the early 1880's a post office was proposed and a name was needed. After many submissions the postal department finally approved Jonah as the name of this newest post office and the community surrounding it. By the late 1800's the town was booming with 200 residents but slowly declined through the first part of the 20th century. In 2000 the town population was reported at 60.

Jonah is situated in Williamson County and is considered part of the Austin Round Rock metro area. Many view Jonah as a blip on the radar but the few residents of this small town consider Jonah a town that time forgot. The original school house still stands and is today, the community center. Life in Jonah is slow paced and easy going. You can take time to smell the roses in the morning head out to Austin for a day of big city fun and be back home in time for dinner. The residents of Jonah are happy to leave the traffic and congestion in Austin and most shop and dine in surrounding communities.

Georgetown Independent school district is responsible for the education of Jonah's school age children. Georgetown ISD is a thriving district that not only strives to provide the best possible education for its students but expects the schools within the district to test as well as its students. The district has succeed in both areas… the students continually rank high in state and national testing while the campuses continually meet and exceed state education requirements…a win win situation.

Homes in Jonah are a mixture of styles and sizes. The homes are usually set apart from each other, bordered by large trees and expansive lawn. The rural feel of Jonahs sparse housing is just one of the reasons people in the community remain. Because the community is small, new home builders have not yet invaded Jonah and the residents of this small town consider Jonah an undiscovered gem and hope it stays that way.
