Hornsby Bend, TX Real Estate

Hornsby Bend was named after Rueben and Sarah Morrison Hornsby. The couple arrived in Texas in the early 1800s on the Steamer Ship Pocahontas. Rueben was part of a party surveying land around Austin's upper colony. When Rueben saw the horseshoe shaped bend in the Colorado River, nine miles east of Austin, he requested the area as his headright. Stephen F. Austin granted Reuben Hornsby 4500 acres on October 16, 1832. The area became Hornsby Bend and Rueben served as postmaster during the Republic of Texas days. The community has been called the oldest settlement in Travis County.

Hornsby Bend today has over 2,000 residents and is home to Hornsby Bend Bird Observatory which is considered the best place in Texas to view our winged friends in their natural habitat. The observatory sees thousands of bird watching enthusiasts and naturalists each year and brings revenue to the town and surrounding areas.

The town has a good selection of new communities and older homes and despite Hornsby Bend's diversity, the community has a small town atmosphere where peaceful streets are laced with tidy well kept homes where families feel safe and children play in their yards worry free. Homes range in price from under $100,000 and the town has a low cost of living. Area amenities include shopping and dining and with Austin a short commute away the weekend opportunities are endless.

Del Valle Independent School District provides education for Hornsby Bend children as well as several nearby communities. The district has 10 campuses that provide the student population with learning tools to last a lifetime. The faculty of Del Valle ISD is a well qualified and diverse group that strives to meet the ever changing needs of its students. The district takes pride in the quality education it provides its students but also takes pride in district achievements. The District continually strives to excel by meeting and exceeding Texas state education requirements. The district and students are both thriving with outstanding educational achievements that prepare students for life after school.
