Florence, Texas was first settled in the 1850s and was then known as Brooksville. In 1857 the town post office opened and the community was renamed Florence. The town quickly became known for its cattle, wheat and cotton and Florence thrived. In the 1890s the town had a number of businesses including a mill, a cheese factory, a doctor's office, a hotel, stone quarry and more.

The town also had a church, school. Florence College opened in 1895. In 1900 the population of Florence was over 300 and in 1927 the population had grown to nearly 1,000 people. Florence was enjoying a boom but it wouldn't last. With the onset of the Great Depression, the population of Florence dropped to around 400. Today the population is just over 3,700.

Florence is just 34 miles northwest of downtown Austin. For residents this is just far enough from the big city and the area has a rural feel and quality. The residents enjoy peaceful streets where homes are spread out to ensure good neighbor relations. Large trees throughout the area give residents privacy and shade and fall colors are spectacular in Florence.

Homes in Florence range from early charmers built around the turn of the last century to homes of modern architecture built today. Shopping and dining can be found in Florence as well as neighboring communities while working residents of Florence enjoy a short commute to work in Austin and other area communities.

Florence Independent School District provides education to the children of Florence. The district is home to 4 campuses and educates almost a 1000 students. The district believes in providing a strong educational foundation and the district proudly flaunts its academic achievements as well as those of the schools. Parents are an active part of the Florence ISD and their help and input is valued. The parents are particularly proud of the glowing reports and achievements earned by the district, the schools and the students and these achievements ensure that each student in the Florence ISD is receiving an education that prepares them for the future.
