The town also had a church, school. Florence College opened in 1895. In 1900 the population of Florence was over 300 and in 1927 the population had grown to nearly 1,000 people. Florence, Texas was first settled in the 1850s and was then known as Brooksville. In 1857 the town post office opened and the community was renamed Florence. The town quickly became known for its cattle, wheat and cotton and Florence thrived. In the 1890s the town had a number of businesses including a mill, a cheese factory, a doctor's office, a hotel, stone quarry and more.
