Elgin, TX Real Estate

Elgin started out as Glassock when the Houston and Central Texas railway came through the area and established a flag stop. In 1872 the town was officially platted and renamed after a railroad official named Robert Morris Elgin. The following year a post office was established and the first Sunday school classes held.

Much of the initial population moved from a nearby community, Perryville, a town the railroad had passed by. Elgin developed into a strong and thriving community and soon Elgin had five general stores, two druggists, three cotton gins, and a saloon in addition to the newspaper and gristmill. In 1890 the community had 1,100 residents. Today Elgin is a small thriving Texas town with over 9,000 happy and friendly residents.

Elgin is just 19 miles east of Austin and is known as the "Sausage Capital of Texas" and several area factories strive to maintain the town's title. The community of Elgin has a population of about 9,000 friendly people and the median home price just $86,000 which makes Elgin an attractive choice for new home buyers and the town is on the brink of strong growth.

Nearby area housing communities are said to be building almost 5,000 new homes while present day construction is thriving as well. The price of homes, a low cost of living and a community with small town charm boasting modern services and conveniences is sure to be a popular choice for many new residents. Elgin may be the next up and coming community but the residents of Elgin brag that Elgin will always be a wonderful town to call home.

Elgin Independent School District educates the children in and around Elgin Texas. The district has six campuses and the student population is reported at 3500. Elgin ISD has its eye on the future and quite literally holds the future in its hands. The future is the student population today and Elgin is striving to provide all the necessary tools and programs to produce well rounded and productive young adults. Their efforts are helping students thrive and grow, partly due to the teachers and staff and partly due to community and parent participation. Education in Elgin is a team effort and the results are showing as students thrive in this environment.
