Downtown Austin, TX Real Estate

The original city to inhabit the area known as Austin was Waterloo. Waterloo was laid out by Edward Burlson in the 1830s and when a new capital city was purposed Waterloo was one of the site choices. Waterloo later became Austin. The capital city of Austin was prosperous and grew and when the Republic of Texas achieved state hood, Austin remained the state's capital. Throughout the years Austin had its struggles just as many cities do, but today the city is thriving with a pulse and beat born in the heart of Texas.

Austin Independent school district offers public education to the children of downtown Austin and area suburbs. The district provides a well rounded and grounded education to a population of over 82,000 students at 110 area campuses. The students of Austin ISD are a diverse group with many nationalities represented in both the student sector as well as the faculty. Because of the needs of a diverse student population the district is constantly updating and adding programs and tools to aid all students in the learning process. The students Austin ISD produces are well rounded and ready to continue on in life or to further their education.

In a city with hundreds of thousands of residents, Downtown Austin is home to around 5,000 unique people. These people are UT students and business people, families, empty nesters and urban singles who live and love in Austin. The downtown area has a thriving condo and loft community where the techie and trendy call home. Apartments and rentals are available, and some older single family homes are situated here as well.

Housing costs in downtown ranges from the low of about $200,000 and up to a million or more. The few single family homes in the downtown area can be small or large and most were built when the city was young. But whether you live in an apartment, old home or a new loft, these choices have something in common…pleasing architecture with a chic sense of style and grace. The residents considered downtown Austin the center of the universe and many would never consider living anywhere else.

Austin is often a contradiction; a historic community for the 21st century, an diverse oasis which is casual yet cosmopolitan, trendy but classic, and energizing and exciting. Residents of downtown are an eclectic group who commute by bus or bicycle or just walk to many of downtowns popular eateries, entertainment and local shopping.

You can hike and bike along Town Lake shores, enjoy unique food and great music, visit theatres and museums, all within a radius of several city blocks. In downtown you won't find strip malls and big department stores, instead you'll find hip and friendly small shops featuring goods from around the corner and around the world. Austin is a city that beats to its own drum.
